Private Residence

This residence is a five bedroom, 7,800 s.f. home adjacent to a private golf course in Springfield, IL. The client's goals were to create separate areas within the home to allow both parents and children to independently pursue their personal interests while also providing spaces to promote family activities. The design takes advantage of the northern views to the golf course within the limitations of the 100 feet wide lot. Deciduous vegetation provides privacy from the seasonally active course.
Scale of a structure of this size in a residential neighborhood with a relatively small lot size (100 feet wide by 140 feet deep) became a major consideration in the design. This challenge was ultimately resolved by creating four separate pavilions connected by semi-flat roof circulation elements. The pavilions help break down the scale of the residence and respond to the program requirement for separate activity zones, (formal, informal, private) within the residence. The exterior materials of wood shingles stained white and a black roof were selected to complement the building forms and to contrast with adjacent homes in an otherwise "beige" neighborhood.
